Michaels Craft stores offer fun and inexpensive crafts for kids on Saturdays. These crafts are recommended usually for children ages 5 to 12, but it is up to the discretion of the class teacher and parent if a child not in the recommended age can participate. My son who was 2 1/2 during the Summer series attended many of these crafts but I did stay for the sessions and helped out. The Kids Club crafts only cost $2 per child which covers all materials. There is also special family crafts days that are FREE and the whole family is encouraged to participate. Class sizes for Kids Club are limited so I highly recommend registering ahead of time either in store or online. Family Craft time there is no registration and goes on while supplies last.

San Elijo Lagoon Not-So-Scary Estuary

This Saturday October 18th and Sunday the 19th the Family Discovery Days at the San Elijo Lagoon will be hosting a Not-So-Scary Estuary. This is a FREE event for the whole family to enjoy. The fun is from 1pm – 4pm both days. There will be crafts, hands on activities, trick-or-treating, a giant spider web, and live animal presentations. This is a great chance to check out the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center and to get to know more about it’s not-so-scary inhabitants. Be sure to come in your costumes as there will be a costume contest going on.

I love finding events for my kids to wear their Halloween costumes as much as possible. I have not taken my family to the San Elijo Lagoon yet but we have gone to it’s neighboring Batiquitos Lagoon and had a wonderful time walking the trails and learning about the lagoon and it’s inhabitants. The San Elijo Lagoon should be just as fun and I love anything Halloween so it’s a win/win for me.

Below is the event flyer with full event details. Have a haunting good time exploring the lagoon!

The Botanic Garden is a great way to see plants from all around the world. There is two interactive areas for kids, so there is plenty for the family to enjoy. On my family’s last visit we barely explored the gardens since we went in the evening. So our next visit we are planning to spend much more time there, especially since the kiddos loved the children’s garden(spent almost our whole visit there!). There are picnic tables available so pack a lunch and enjoy the beauty the Botanic Garden has to offer.

Irvine Regional Park and OC Zoo

Posted in Summer Fun!

My family went on a little adventure this weekend to Orange County. We wanted to go somewhere we have never been before and break from our usual areas we go out to. Orange County not only has beautiful beaches but it is filled with nice parks and great nature reserves. So we decided to check out Irvine Regional Park. I had only heard a little bit about this park so we were excited to check out all that was there.

The park was huge! When you enter there is a entrance fee of $3 per car on weekdays or $5 on weekends. There is walking, biking and horseback riding trails all through out it. Many different bikes are available for rental. A steam engine train that travels through a portion of the park, cost to ride is $5 a person and children under 1 year ride free. We didn’t ride the train this trip but plan on going back since I have a coupon for it that only works on weekdays. There was a small lake with pedal bikes to rent to ride on the water. Pony rides and horse rentals are also available. Or you can just set up an picnic under the large shady trees while the children play on one of the playgrounds throughout the park.

Oh and I forgot to mention there is also a Zoo in the park! That’s right a zoo, how cool is that. The OC Zoo was located not to far inland from the enterance of the park. It is a small Zoo but we absolutely loved it. All the animals were so visible and close my toddler had no problem seeing them. The keepers were all so friendly and informative with the animal encounters. My daughter completed a scavenger hunt and received a free OC Zoo patch. Before I forget entrance to the Zoo is just $2 a person with children 3 and under free.

Another one of our stops in the park was to the Nature Center. Entrance to the Nature Center is free, there is a donation box to help with the upkeep and running it. I love to visit Nature Centers and see all the history about the area. They are usually interactive for the kids which I always feel is a great way of learning. My daughter completed another scavenger hunt in the center which was posted on a board with others after she finished. The Nature Center isn’t very large but there was a lot of my kids to do there. Some of the hands on activities were dusting for fossils, panning for gold, making animal tracks, a touch and guess station, and a replica of a Native American hut. This is just a bit of what is in the Nature Center.

I feel like I could keep going on about this wonderful park. My family had a great experience and were so glad to go on a little adventure here. It really paid off to go somewhere new and break from routine. If you happen to be out in the Orange County area be sure to check this place out!

Temecula Hot Summer Nights

Posted in Summer Fun!

image

Tomorrow night, Friday July 11th, is the start of Temecula’s Hot Summer Nights in Old Town Temecula. This is a free event geared towards families. There will be party jumps, games, entertainment, and trivia contests. And of course music! Each week will feature a different music genre, such as: Blues, Ska, Country, Classic Rock (Tribute Bands), Beach, Reggae, Alternative Rock, and Big Band just to name a few. Bands will be performing throughout Old Town on patios, in parking lots or on special stages. Hot Summer Nights is every Friday night from 6 to 10pm, and is going on from July 11th until August 29th.

One of my family’s favorite pastimes is to just walk around Old Town. It is such a nice relaxing atmosphere in Old Town, all the restaurants aromas are so enticing and the shops are all so unique. Our favorite thing to do is get a cold drink from the Old Town Rootbeer Company and walk listening to all the great music. Or on nights when the kids are restless we take a nice drive through with the windows down taking it all in. This year we are excited to check out all the activities for the kids.

Friday’s Line Up-July 11th

    • 6pm-Luciano at East Main Street
    • 6pm– Wow Bubbles at Pub & Grub Lot
    • 6:30pm– Tomcats at Third Street Smokehouse
    • 7pm– Kanan Road at Baily’s Courtyard

See every Friday’s line up by clicking here on temeculaevents.org

I will be researching free summer concerts in other areas so keep a look out for more summer concert posts ;)
